Property-casualty insurer Travelers Cos., which has a major presence in downtown Hartford, on Tuesday announced it’s pledged $5 million to COVID-19 coronavirus relief efforts.

That represents Travelers’ largest-ever charitable donation to a crisis, and the money will be used to support families and communities impacted by the global pandemic in North America, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, officials said.

“Our customers and communities are facing an unprecedented challenge,” said Travelers CEO and Chairman Alan Schnitzer. “Helping in a crisis is what we do, and the commitments we’re making today to take care of the communities in which we live and work are an extension of the fundamental role we play.”

Travelers said the donation will be split into three parts:

  • $3.5 million for “leading charities” providing urgent services, including emergency assistance for hourly workers, food and shelter for vulnerable populations, small businesses and resources helping mitigate disruptions in education.
  • $1 million to support certain employees of Travelers’ vendors. That will include paying the wages and health benefits for eligible third-party contract employees who provide dining and building maintenance services at its offices. This donation will help prevent layoffs, Travelers officials say.
  • A $500,000 employee matching program where contributions will be designated for organizations including Americares, Dublin Simon Community, Food Banks Canada, Team Rubicon and United Way.

Travelers, which has offices in several buildings across the Capital City, also said it has repurposed its kitchen facilities in Hartford to help not-for-profit organizations prepare and deliver free meals. It will provide 100 meals daily between Monday and Thursday to Hands on Hartford, and 160 meals daily from Monday to Friday to Meals on Wheels.
