About 50 employees from Travelers surprised students at Hartford’s Michael D. Fox Elementary School Wednesday with a delivery of thousands of school supplies, from laptops to books.
“I’m speechless,” said M.D. Fox Principal Iris Ramos. “Thank you. And I know our students are going to appreciate it. If you know how to read, you can do anything in the world.”
The more than 6,000 items given to Fox students are part of a larger effort by Travelers to fund literacy-related supplies for neighborhood elementary schools in Connecticut and in select cities across the United States.
Travelers worked with the Hartford Public Schools behind the scenes to find out what the teachers and principal of the Fox Elementary school needed and then bought everything on their lists – from Chromebooks and Kindle Fires to pencils, markers, notebooks and reading books. In addition, Travelers employees will be volunteering to read to students in a number of the recipient schools.
Travelers is working with DonorsChoose.org, an organization that helps fulfill the supply and project needs of teachers in Hartford, Middlesex and Tolland counties in Connecticut. The effort will support more than 50 teachers across more than 30 schools — helping more than 2,000 students foster a love for literature and learning.
The company will also work with DonorsChoose.org to fund select literacy-related wish lists throughout the country.
